The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department announced that it will be implementing a “Neighborhood Watch” program in areas around the county. The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department will be enrolling officers in a neighborhood watch training program as it focuses on fighting crime, particularly in the most affected sectors of the county.

The decision comes after Sheriff Schmerber and Chief Deputy Robert De Leon met with residents of the Seco Mines sector last week. During that meeting, the officials spoke to the residents about the judicial processes for captured criminals who have committed crimes in the area and their right to make bail as they await their trials.

Seco Mines residents favor the program and plan to form a committee focused on informing the community of any crimes or incidents, and reporting suspicious activity directly to the Sheriff’s Department officer who would be in charge of the Neighborhood Watch program. Chief Deputy De León added that this same plan could be enforced in different sectors of the city that experience a rise in crime, and neighborhoods that request it. He made it clear, however, that residents who are part of the committee do not have the right to detain suspicious characters; instead, they would have a direct phone line to the officer in charge of the sector, who would then immediately dispatch assistance and proceed with detaining criminals if necessary.

Texas should remove all the bail bonds out and keep the criminals locked up till the court date comes, that's getting the criminals spoiled they get caught and one hour later they are out on the streets again

Most arrests lead to, "theres no room at the jail" and they end up having to let them go anyways

Where can we see the details of this neighborhood watch program. How much money will be allocated and will the son of a certain newspaper get another promotion?

Texas allows citizens arrest. Plus I would think with the surge in crime MCSO would establish a sub station in the community to cut down on reaction time and helps establish a command presence to deter criminals from offending.

My thing is what took you so long? In the Academy they teach you about community policing to reduce crime, such as neighborhood watch along with Law Enforcement in local neighborhoods! Why is it when there's crime all units response code 3 leaving the dept. all the time???? #itsaboutfuckingtime what took you so long Sherriiff??

Great!!

Vote in more Republicans and you wouldn’t need neighborhood watch programs to protect the neighborhoods that should be safe at any hour of the day and hoodlum free. But due to the idiot in charge Biden, our once quiet streets are being infested by illegals and vagrants who are praying on our hard working citizens now. Elections have consequences and they are in full view now.

Ty

This is a move in the right direction. Well done.

Maverick County Sheriff Schmerber and Constable Precinct 3 Mario Hernandez met with citizens of the Seco Mines sector to discuss the recent home burglaries that have occurred in the area. Sheriff Schmerber stated that the citizens in the area are concerned with the crimes recently committed, and question why the offenders caught have been allowed to be temporarily released on bail. Sheriff Schmerber responded that the offenders have a right to be released on bail; however, this does not mean that the offenders won’t be charged, as their release is temporary as they wait for their trials. The offenders will then have to present themselves to court and in front of a jury.

Really? So they can go rob a few homes before they leave for Mexico? I would be curious to know how many skip bail and do not show for court?

Nice to hear Thanks for making it public I'm from seco mines ?

Years go by, by the time they get a sentence!!!

Curious to know what the bail was. Why isn’t the bail set high to where they cant hey released or they have to sign over a property deed? That way if they skip court they lose the parents home. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think it would knock out 90% of the burglaries if people would secure their trash better. Lock it up inside their homes. A lot of people leave junk in their yard and then wonder why it gets stolen

Raise the Damm bail !!!!!

Well said Tom Schmerber

Waite till they get shot and killed then they gna want to blame the home owners 😂😂

Protect your Life, Your Family, & Your Home. Law Enforcement most likely won't be around to prevent a crime. They will be present to investigate a crime only after a crime(s) have already happened.
